WPHS Drama Department
Course Offerings

WPHS Theatre Arts Course Offerings

Theatre 1 - Fundamentals of Acting

Theatre 2 - Style of Theatre

This is a beginner level course in the fundamentals of acting. You will establish an understanding of all aspects of the theatre making process including: content vocabulary, basic theory, acquiring foundational skills in an actor’s process, as well as increase your public speaking skills, confidence, and empathy skills. Through exercises, analysis and improvisations, the student actor will explore their mind, body, and voice as the actor’s primary creative resources when creating a performance. We will not only be sharpening your onstage skills, but also looking at how drama practices can impact your life offstage. In theatre, as in life, we learn by doing. Be prepared that this is a practical class and you should expect practical application and in class performances as an essential component of your experience in this course. There will be ONE PUBLIC PERFORMANCE at the end of the term.
Intermediate Theatre Arts aims to equip our students for future theatrical endeavors by introducing them to diverse styles and genres of theater making;  such as tragedy, comedy, puppetry, mask work, immersive theater, and Theater for Young Audiences (TYA). Exploring classical to contemporary practices, students will delve into the historical and cultural context that influences each style and engage in practical exercises and scene work. Thus, they deepened their understanding of how to build a believable character, explore a wider range of staging techniques, and further hone their craft. Intermediate Theatre Arts may require some rehearsals outside the school day in community performance opportunities.

Advanced Drama

The purpose of this course is to prepare actors for college, community, and professional performance opportunities while refining their approach to characterization and deepening personal artistry. All actors are expected to participate in the end of term VAPA Showcases.
